Skyline to Sea 50k will be my first 50k. That will be enough to contend with without getting car sick on the way to the start. Curvy roads and I do not do well together. I am not familiar with the area. It seems to me that the shuttle (from the finish to start) may be taking some long curvy roads. I was thinking I should stay at the Saratoga Oaks Lodge about 7 miles from the start the night before. Or will that 7 miles along Big Basin Way and Congress Springs Rd be h_ll in a car race morning. Advice? (I threw up on the car ride to a triathlon once, it wasn't a good start

I'm probably the wrong person to ask, since I commute up and down Page Mill Road, which is more curvy than highway 9.
I would say that if you give yourself enough time to drive it slowly, you'll probably be okay. Of course if you're doing that, please take advantage of the pullouts to let the faster people by.
If I knew what I was doing in September I would consider offering you a room, since I'm about the same distance from the start but I'm already up on Skyline, which is mellower than any of the up/down roads.

Thanks for the advice! I will stay close by and get dropped at the start after a SLOW car ride.

Seriously, chew a "QueasEase tablet before you go, these things really work! I suffer terribly from car sickness, trust me. These are from Pacific BioLogic, they are herbal and chewable.

I am having the same concern.I am going to do this run also(just to need reg, but monsy is super tight right now) and I get so SO VERY car sick and thor up whwnever I drive these type of roads, including this rode. I am a little worried about it too. Dramamine just makes me super sleepy and driving doesnt help either.

Pretty much no matter which way you go to get there, you will have to deal with some windy roads. As mentioned before, leave early and drive slow to give yourself time to recuperate. There are a few motels on Hwy. 9 in Ben Lomond, but you will still have to deal with driving up to Skyline Blvd. along Hwy. 9. Not sure if that is any worse than coming up from Saratoga, though. The course is beautiful. My wife and I just ran it (except for the very top part, which we decided to take the Old Saratoga Toll Road instead of the SttS trail to Waterman Gap) this past Sunday. It was fabulous, and we had a perfect day weather-wise. There are some great views of the Santa Cruz mountains, creeks meandering here and there, huge redwoods, and even a few banana slugs!!! I had to chuckle when I was just reading the description, though, as Sarah and Wendell list it as being "almost entirely downhill!" For a PCTR run, maybe, but there were a few good "almost entirely NOT downhill" sections!" I highly recommend running this one, as I know I will be getting back out there a few times this summer myself. Unfortunately, I just found out my cousin is getting married back on the east coast - on the day of the race so, sadly, we will not be able to run the inaugural Skyline-to-the-Sea. I'm bummed.

I'm now signed up for this event, and I'm about 7.5 miles on Skyline from the start (or 11.7 miles by trail, which I did round-trip this morning, but I digress). Offering one or two people a room is not out of the question...

How about a sidewalk to park a pickup to sleep in?

How about a sidewalk to park a pickup to sleep in? If that was directed at me, sure, except for the sidewalk part. There are no sidewalks within miles of here that I am aware of. Send me e-mail (the e-mail link should be active for me).

I am coming in from Denver and was wondering if there are some place to stay at or near the finish. I could drive to the finish and take the shuttle. Any suggestions on hotels at or near the finish?? Thanks

Thanks This is the closest (I think) that you'll find to the finish: www.davenportroadhouse.com/Other than that, you will probably want to look for something in Santa Cruz, as there isn't much up the coast until you get to Half Moon Bay or Pacifica. Which, if you are coming in from Denver, could be really nice places to stay, just a bit further than Santa Cruz.

Andy, Thanks for the response. Davenport Road House is booked but I didn't think to look at Santa Cruz. I appreciate the suggestions and will check them out. Clyde

I got a cabin at Fern River Resort in Felton. $132 a night including tax. Looks like its pretty close to the race and its right on highway 9. They don't like to book for one night, but I was able to get a cabin for two people for the Friday night. My son swears he can drive home to Fresno after running 50K.
