Very good comments, Harry - sound advice regarding trying everything out first.

Generally, the rule "nothing new on race day" has worked well for me so far. I agree with this; however, I can't get away from the "newness" of miles 66 through 100.

what - you didn't do a 100m training run?
ok - I'll be available for a little night run Wednesday and Friday. Same for next week.
Btw, the best way to enter Rancho at night is at Mora Drive (googlemaps it)
any takes?
Norbert - I think we passed each other close to Mt. Rose on Sunday. It only registered with me after about 10 seconds that there could only be one guy with a 'Sparkasse' shirt around. Wasn't a good time to stop and chew the fat anyways.

Harry, just came back. Yes, I got your PM and I also realized seeing you passing by at TRT - first I thought a thunderstorm would come up, because it felt like a sudden flash of lightning when you ran by... Now I need some rest - and I'll get back to you once I can walk upright... Norbert - proud wearer of a "Sparkasse" shirt (Well, I don't have any other)

Someone from the orienteering club got a $110 citation for running after dark at Rancho. This was in about 2003. I do not know if he had a car in the lot or not, but the citation was specifically for running.
Suggested S. Bay locations for after-dark activities: Quicksilver (park in town, then run in), Henry Coe (indeed legally), Los Gatos East: Sierra Azul (park in town, run in), Los Gatos West (park in town, run in).

I've known people who've gotten in trouble on Mt. Diablo, too - although I believe that they were just kicked out, not ticketed. Everyone I know who's gotten busted on Diablo has entered from the South Gate/Danville side, and has gotten caught down pretty low on the mountain.

Monte Bello might be a better choice (but slightly farther away). You could park at the top of Alpine Road where there is housing, and avoid hassles from rangers. Plus, you could run Russian Ridge.

I might go in through the Hidden Villa private park. I really am no more afraid of rangers than of mountain lions. Cars driven by people on cell phones, however, scare me.
I've got this planned for next Wednesday, starting around 9PM and I have a leisurely 2h max run in mind.
(Any rangers reading this board please be advised that you'll have to be a faster runner than I am to give me a ticket!)

Last Saturday I saw a rather big rattle snake (3 ft) on the PG&E trail at Rancho. It was calm and not coiled up, probably thermalizing after a rather cool morning. Hikers who I notified about it reported they saw a second one plus a bob cat near the trail. So, with this and all the legal discussions I'm a little less interested in a night run now The fear of the unknown...

Alright, I'll let you know if I meet the elusive Cold-Seeking rattler, the fearsome Man-eating Bobcat or Ranger Rick.

Have a good run Harry. Make sure you run REALLY hard so you are tired enough on Saturday to give me a fighting chance to finish within a couple of hours of you Sunday morning .

Oh, Harry since you'll talk to Ranger Rick, can you please ask him whether it's possible to get a group discount on the tickets he will give us? Tell him there are more coming and perhaps he also does periodic debit account deduction. I won't have cash with me all the time... ;D Tell me how it was! And give the snake a hug! N.

Norbert, maybe its like outrunning the bear in that only the slowest runner gets the ticket. You know, "I don't have to out run the Ranger to avoid the ticket, I just have to outrun YOU!"
