Hi everybody,
I'm signed up to run the HH 50 miler in August, but I'm starting to get really bored training on my own and could use some company. I have been doing 3-4 hour runs on Saturday and Sunday for the past 3 weeks on a combination of road and trail (with moderate elevation gain). Anyone interested in meeting for a long run this weekend? I live on the penninsula, but I don't necessarily need to run close to home. (Oh- and to give you an idea of my pace- ran the 29 K in Santa Cruz last June in 3:35.)
Thanks, Vanessa

Hi Vanessa, There are a few of us running the course this Saturday and you're welcome to join. Some of us are hoping to run the 50 mile lap, but some are not. I'm sure we can work out varying distances. Also, no worries on pace, we have a variety.
We're still working out the details. Contact me via email if you're interested.

Cool, Steve! I didn't know that you all were going to run out there this weekend - have a great time out there, you guys! We'd love to hear how it goes!
I'm running the 50 mile course with my friend, Nadia, next week - we have to do it mid-week, 'cause we've run out of weekends. She's going to do the hundred, so it'll be her last long training run.
Have fun!
Sarah

Hey Sarah,
Yep, a couple of us have been running part of the course the past couple weekends. I've not run the area before. Wow, beautiful views! I'm really looking forward to 8/11 being my first 100 finish!
I think I know Nadia, if she's the same Nadia I met at the Mt. Diablo 50 mile. She gave me a great recommendation for a Dr. to address my IT band issue. Tell her I said hi, and thanks again. Hope you two have a great run!
Look forward to seeing you soon!
Cheers, Steve

Oh, my gosh, Steve - I didn't realize that you'd never run out there before! How exciting!! It IS super-beautiful, isn't it?! And just WAIT 'til you're out there at night - with meteor showers - I bet you'll love it!!
Ha - I'd forgotten about you and Nadia and the doctor and all! Yep, it's one and the same Nadia - and I will be sure to say 'hi' to her from you! She'll be out there with you at HH - hope you two get the chance to run together for awhile.
I, too, can hardly wait to see your first hundred finish next month!!
Take good care, and see you then!!
Sarah

How can you run there without having the course marked? I get even lost IF the course is marked, don't I Sarah?
Best regards Norbert (currently in Slovakia - far east Europe)

It's all about the bonus miles. There no extra charge for tacking on extra distance when lost! The trails in the Headlands are pretty well signed. Anyone heading out with a course map would nail it pretty easily, methinks... One bonus of running the Headlands without it being an organized run is that all the wildlife isn't flushed out before you get there (unless you're a frontrunner, which I'm certainly not). Keep your eyes peeled for the jackrabbits, bobcats, eagles, red-tailed hawks, and more... - Fred (the wild turkeys around Diablo are way cool, too!)

How can you run there without having the course marked? Part of the enjoyment is getting out there and simply enjoying the run wherever it takes me and figuring out where to go along the way. For me it's not solely about following exclusively the right path (unless of course I've told my wife I'll home by a certain time! ;D), I'm out there, to be out there and so I typically don't worry about getting lost....unless of course I run low on water...which unfortunately has happened. BTW, I usually print out a map and take it with me if I don't know my way.

I would print out and carry the course directions with a course map as back-up, if I were you, Norbert - and a GPS unit, breadcrumbs to leave a trail, ID, search dogs, a map of the locations of the nearest helicopter landing areas, and a cell phone with 911 pre-programmed.
Seriously, Fred's right - you should be fine with a map and the course directions.
