Please be forewarned - this report is REALLY long! I didn't really write it expecting people to read it - I mostly just wanted to get things down on paper before I forgot them. But maybe I should have waited a LITTLE longer so that I forgot SOME of it - maybe then I could have kept it under 10 pages! www.pctrailruns.com/SttS_Report.pdfSarah

Congratulations Sarah!
Who knows? Maybe instead of running a marathon in every state, the new thing will be to run across every state. We both have one in the bag!
I understand the sort of "anti-climatic" state that one can be in. I've already created a 2008 version of running across Iowa.

Yep, we each crossed one this year! That's great that you're going to do the 'new and improved' Iowa crossing next year, Brad - I'll enjoy following your journey again!
For a change, I'm not feeling anti-climactic after this one - I usually get that feeling, too, after long stuff. Maybe it's 'cause I've got Wasatch in just a couple of weeks, and several other fun things on this year's schedule. Not to mention a couple of fun, non-organized events already planned for next year.
Good luck at RdL, and hope we see you again soon!

I only just started reading - but I gotta ask this (and I'm pretty sure I can speak for not just me): How on earth did you figure it would change our opinion of you if you wouldn't finish? Great if that worry gave you some motivation - but hey! we might behave like little kids sometimes but we're not *that* fickle! ok - back to the report...

Oh, Harry, I'm not saying that you guys are fickle! More that, once people know about something, it's that much harder to quit...for me, at least.
I remember the first time I was going to run Angeles Crest years ago and this woman I worked with, Pat, didn't really know anything about it but thought that it was cool and was just really hoping that I would finish. So, when things got a bit tough out there, I remember thinking how much fun it would be to go back to work on Monday to tell Pat that I had done it.
I'm not saying that I would have stopped running at AC any more than I would have quit SttS if you guys hadn't known about it - just that it motivates me to keep going when people are aware of what I'm attempting.
Does that make sense?
Sarah

Of course it makes sense - it just sounded a bit like you thought we'd be disappointed if you didn't tough it out. To be honest, I nearly quit the Tahoe Relay 2 years ago because of one little section at Incline Village without a shoulder because I was so fricking scared of getting taken out by an RV side mirror - no way I could have done what you did! (oh, and there was a smiley after 'fickle') ->-> <-<-

I know that there was a smiley after it - in fact, I cracked up when I read your reply the first time!! ;D But I also knew what you meant and figured that I should try to clarify what I'd written. Yeah, those RV mirrors are THE WORST aren't the?!?! And the number of people talking on cell phones and paying little attention to driving was shocking, too. And there were at least two people who were like those kids you sometimes see on bike paths when they're just learning to ride their two-wheelers - they see something coming toward them and it's as if they just are drawn to it, as if they can't go any other way than straight toward it. Two women did that to me with their cars - until they both almost seemed to 'snap out of it' and straighten out their cars. Weird. Sarah

Congrats Sarah! You're crazy. In a good way I am totally with you when it comes to telling people as a motivating factor. This has gotten me through so many runs - no actually ALL of them Otherwise I'd be way too lazy and wimpy to do anything like it. Good read (not finished yet) I like the longer writeup, lets you follow the ups and downs more closely! Excellent Job! Beat

EXACTLY!!
I think it's actually "too long", except I don't know how to make it shorter once I've written it. Thanks for reading it, Beat, and for your nice comments.

Good read (not finished yet) I like the longer writeup, lets you follow the ups and downs more closely! Which leads me to a request: How about a topic area in the message boards specifically for race/run reports?

Work's been a bit busy lately (that's my excuse for not yet finishing my HH100 report) so I am going to take your report with me this weekend and read it. As for my opinion of you changing had you not completed the run, I have to admit that it probably would have. Of course, that's only because I think of you and Wendell as god-like, trail running and race-directing robots from another planet. Had you failed in your endeavor I would have had to admit that you are only human after all. I am very happy to confirm that you are indeed not human and that no earth-bound, mortal could really be expected to both manage as many races as you guys do and still fit their own running schedules into the mix. I feel much better about not finishing my race report yet.

Oh, and another cool thing I forgot to put in the report. Aaron and I were on the GG Bridge and were almost to the second upright when a guy came running toward pretty fast - faster than anyone else we'd seen - with small pack on his back, and I looked at his shirt - and it was a PCTR dri-release from this summer's Mt. Diablo run! So I said, "Hey, nice shirt!" as he ran by, and I looked back to see him looking down at his chest to see what shirt he was even wearing!! It just seemed like a really cool thing to have happen in the last mile of over 200...

Nevertheless, I do think I was pretty close (I rode my bike to the bridge at about 7:45 that evening).

Sarah, I just read the WHOLE thing and it was a wonderful read. You are totally amazing and you have the most fabulous crew. The way you described the shoulder traffic running was really spot-on too. I was feeling nervous just reading it. Congratulations Sarah and great job Wendell & Aaron.

Sarah, what a wonderful report! Since you've visited my blog, you know I have nothing against the very wordy, and I sort of think with such an epic journey, that kind of length is necessary! I just set myself up with a sandwhich before starting, and the pages just seemed to fly by I'm just so in awe and inspired by you and what you were able to accomplish. It's so special that you're family is such a supportive and encouraging one. I love your comment that it never seemed to cross Aaron's mind that you *couldn't* just run across the state. There's always talk of teaching your kids that you can accomplish anything, but I think you just show that on so many levels. Thanks again for sharing this with us, and congratulations on the amazing job!
