Well, after Sarah's most impressive Sierra to the Sea run last week, it's my turn. I'll be running the 165+ Tahoe Rim Trail over Labor Day weekend. The plan is to start Saturday morning around 9 a.m. and run all weekend. I ran it a few years ago in 42 hours over 4 days. This time will be continous and should take 50 or 60 hours. If anyone is up at Tahoe next weekend and wants to say "hi" or run a section with me, please send us an e-mail ( events@pctrailruns.com and we'll coordinate. Thanks. Wendell

Yes, we'll be up there. Martina coaches Saturday morning so we were thinking of hooking up sometime Sunday. I looked at the trail a bit and my confused guess is that we'd probably find you around or past Mount Rose then. Or maybe Saturday evening? I'll send you an email in a bit.

Great! I'm starting at Tahoe City and heading counterclockwise through Desolation Wilderness. I expect to be around Heavenly on Sunday.

Well, I'll be in an airplane headed in the opposite direction (towards Tokyo) when you start your run, but I wish you the best of luck out there. After reading Sarah's report you are wise to stay as off-road as possible for your next run. However, if you start looking too relaxed out their on the trail with all that natural beauty, she and Aaron might need to get on a couple of mountain bikes and ride by just grazing you with the handle bars so you get to experience some of the stress of her run . Have a great time and I can't wait for the write up :-)

Thanks, everyone. We're looking forward to it. Please don't expect a big write-up like Sarah's SttS report.

I plan to post updates here as Aaron and I see Wendell at the various crewing points around the lake. I'll take the camera, too.
Looking forward to seeing a few of you up there!

We left home this morning at 12:20. Wendell had slept for almost three hours before we left and got three more in the car. We arrived at the trailhead in Tahoe City (going counter-clockwise, so headed toward Barker Pass) at about 3:15, I guess, and he was on his way by a little before 3:30. As soon as he was out of sight – which wasn’t too long, considering it was pitch black – I drove to the Safeway parking lot, where Aaron and I slept ‘til almost 6:00.
After stops at Starbucks (for a latte for me, since they were the only thing open before 6:00) and then at Syd’s (for a muffin and egg, cheese, and ham on a bagel for Wendell), we drove to the Barker Pass trailhead where Wendell hoped to arrive around 7:30. Part of the reason that he’d wanted to start in the dark was so that he would go out more slowly, so 4+ hours for this 16+ mile section would be just about perfect.
Not long after 7:30, we saw Wendell headed toward us down the trail – excellent! Everything had gone really well and according to his plan, so he ate and put on sunblock while I refilled his Camelbak with ice water and his handheld with chocolate milk for the next LONG section. It had gotten a little colder than expected in this first section, so he’ll probably carry a jacket at night from now on. It was so nice to be in this quiet, relaxed setting – no rushing around or trying to get in and out quickly, like in a race.
After 15 minutes or so, I’d guess, he was on his way again, headed toward Desolation Wilderness, thingy’s Pass (how funny - that pass is named after the nickname for Richard, which the filter on here caught), and Echo Lake, which is where we’ll see him again late this afternoon. I think it’s about 32 miles to Echo Lake, so we plan to arrive between 3 and 4 to make sure that we beat him there – he told us that he’d be arriving about 5:00.
I took a few pictures, but am not sure that I can post them without Wendell’s help.

Very, very cool! I look forward to reading the future updates. However, I will have to catch up once I land in Japan Sunday evening (sometime in the wee hours California time). Good luck to Wendell. Have a great run!

What are you doing in Japan? I'll probably be posting in the wee hours, too, since I will try to update the message board every time we see Wendell.
Have a great trip, and we'll see you soon, Steve!
