Ok so now I have 3 weeks til the 50, I have done multiple marathons, variety of 20-30 miles runs, ive done time on my feet runs/walks...so now what?? do I not do anymore long runs on the weekends and just do mild mid length runs.Im nervous and worrying I didnt do enough..lol
what type of running should I do for the next 3 weeks??
Also I am solo for this 50,Morgan has yet another stress fracture from his dreaded shin splints he cant seem to rid of, SO he is "crewing" for me and bring me my food that I love to eat and my energy drinks that I have come to love while running a longtime....he will support me....its sad but his time will come and then I shall crew for him....

SF One Day? Nothing like an 90 or 100 mile training run prior to your first 50, right? If you are feeling up to it, you may want to try a nice easy paced thingy Collins trail marathon (aka Golden Hills marathon) this weekend. Then you could take the next two weekends somewhat easy (10 - 15 miles).

I have to work this weekend, I got suckered into it. I shouildnt complain, they let me have the weekends off so I can do my runs....
I am going to go hit rattlesnake this weekend for a short run(10 or so) on Sunday.
So I thought about SFone day BUT I have to take it easy on my knees as I never know when they will decide that theya re not running without it feeling is if I have a knife shoved under my kneecaps...ouch.They have been awesome lately.
Its my first 50 miler so I dont know if I have trained enough.I took the advice of not going over 30 miles for my long runs, so naturally I am thinking "man that is a whole 20 more miles I will have to run, I hope I can do it". The good thing about me is I can run slow for long periods of time and I have patience and I am stubborn so that should get me through the last 20 miles...and the go girl energy drinks LOL

You certainly did enough - no worries about that. If that 50 is a big goal, I wouldn't do anything too much anymore - there's not enough time to build any more base, all you can do is tire yourself out - or even worse get injured. I would continue regular training this week, then start tapering over the last 2 weeks, reducing the duration of your exercises by and by (I'm sure you know the drill). I for example (I'm very lazy I know) would run just once the weekend before the race (maybe 2 hrs or 3), then during the week do some cross training (bike), and maybe one more 30-40 minute run 2/3 days before the race. Tapering can be unnerving, but you won't lose any endurance (or speed) even if you did nothing the next 3 weeks. Just ask Sarah, who did her personal best 100 miler after barely being able to run for quite a while , or so I think. Anyways, I'm sure you'll do great. Just keep going Ciao, Beat

thanks guys. Yes I get quite irratable the last 3 days before a run because I dont usually run until run day. It works for me, as for tapering I just cut back my long runs and run 3 days during the week as normal. My weekly mileage during the week is usually 5-8 miles tue0thurs and the weekends is when I do my high mileage days......I think this weekend I will do 10 trail run and a 12 mile road run...we will see.
I am sore today after doing the Sacramento marathon, my body hurts more after running marathons on pavement as compared to trail BUT I do love a good road race still.
you all are a huge help to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! im just getting nervous, ive trained for this(helen klein 50)since June!

One other thing to thing about before a goal race, I think, is sleep. I think starting a long (for you) run tired is THE WORST!! It's not the sleep the night before that counts, either, but the sleep you get the nights prior to that.
And you do have a good memory, Beat! (Yet another way that I can tell you're SO MUCH younger than I!) I ran a 90+ minute PR at Javelina last year, having had to take three weeks almost completely off from running due to having strep throat. My legs were super rested, I'd gotten tons of sleep, and I was anxious to get out there and run.
You're going to do great up there - and, while I'm sorry for Morgan that he won't be joining you on the course this time, it'll be SO wonderful to see him and know that he'll have all your favorites with him. It'll be a day you'll both always remember, I'm sure.
Have fun, and do let us know how it goes!!
Sarah

I am getting nervous..Ok so I am at a point now where I can randomly run a marathon or 50K at any time. I am worried about these next couple of weeks. I only ran 10 miles last week due to getting the flu and I was in bed for 4 days...sat I managed a 10 miler which ZAPPED me out and I felt that on Sunday. I think today I finally feel normal so I am going to go do a 6 or 7 miler tonight after work. Its my knees I am worried about d**n TENDONITIS!!! the cold weather is making them ache and I think I have ultramarathonitis, meaning I am feeling phantom pangs haha and feeling every soreness, uncomfortablness or whatever have you. Am I the only one doing this? I get like this with road marathons too. I think I will be running evry gingerly the next few weeks due to not wanting to risk anything before the 50....I guess I am worrying because its my first and I am a obsessive worrier when it comes to this stuff.........
Ok my newbie rant and whine is done. Feel free to smack some sense into me lol

Is there a way that you can channel this obsessive worriness into an obsessive compulsion to finish? I'm generalizing but I think Ultrarunners are OCD by nature. Just tell yourself that you will finish no matter what. It's too late in the game to condition those legs, so if you ain't got it now, then you ain't got it. Rest and mentally prepare yourself for the finish! Good luck, you got it in the bag.

I just wanted to say how excited I am for this 50 miler coming up. I am now temp. over my neurotic freak out. I have pretty much laid off running this month with very few runs .I had the flu, then my knee bothered me and then I got a bad head cold...so needless to say I will be totally rested for the run, which is in 8 DAYS!
I have been walking inlcine at the gym on the treadmill. I cant get to the trails lately because I am so busy on the weekends. So I have been hitting the gym harder now that I am not running. Next week I may go hit the track and do a few miles...I will see. Anyway excitement is building WOHOO.
Ok I must get going to work, the fuzzy critters are waiting for there nurse.
