ooh yay! I've been looking at this trail lately and thinking about trying out backpacking on it, while also thinking about it's convenient length for a trail run. If it's not till september, I'd so be in for the 100k . And it's in my neighborhood! I'm all for making a bee offering. Maybe they'll leave us alone then!

Well, in the "Bee Movie" the bees sue mankind for stealing their honey. Maybe we can settle on e.g. donating Steve for a 30 minutes munch fest while all other runners pass the patch? ;D

Heh, funny to check the forum tonight and see y'all discussing this. I did a self-supported Skyline To The Sea 100k in August. I did it by parking in Big Basin and leaving the car right when they "open" for day use at 6 AM. I ran to the sea, back to Big Basin, ate lunch and grabbed more water, ran to Saratoga Gap, chowed hot dogs & Coke from the vendor guy there (way friendly and chatty!), and ran back to Big Basin. I don't recall my total time, but it left plenty of leeway before the end of day use parking.
Driving to/from Waddell Beach is a bear for most of us. The ultimate would be to park up at Saratoga Gap and run to the sea and back. However, Big Basin is a pretty sweet finish line. :-)
Sorry to say, I didn't meet any of Steve's friends in the sporty yellow coats...

However, I do think it looses a little something over doing the trail end-to-end. After all, the trail is named Skyline-to-the-Sea so shouldn't it be done in that direction? Also, if the main event is to be a 50K that runs the whole trail then doing it from BB isn't really an option. Furthermore, you would want to start the 50K from the opposite direction as the 100K so they share the same finish line. This means that it is either Waddell or Saratoga. Personally, I think that Waddell is the best choice for the 100K since it allows the 50K people to run the trail in its namesake direction and we all get to finish at the beach. Of course, it could be something that is changed each year like a lot of famous races. One year it's Skyline-to-the-Sea and the next its the-Sea-to-Skyline ;D

Dave Horning (EnviroSports) put on the Skyline-to-the-Sea 50 miler for several years starting in 1987. It ran from Saratoga Gap through Big Basin Park headquarters, down to the mouth of Waddell Creek, and back to finish at the park headquarters. That was my only sub 7 hour 50 miler and the only 50 miler I ever won. I think it was run in September. It also had a marathon that finished at park headquarters. It is a beautiful trail and not technically difficult.

We are looking at a Saturday event - and it looks as if it'll be a 50 Km only, at least for the first year.
Any ideas about how to handle the bees, Steve?

I think you may have answered your own question right there in your first statement. A few of us are just going to have to sacrifice a very early morning and run the 50K from the finish line to the start as a self-supported, bee attraction expedition. I will personally gather up enough pollen with which to spray all the other volunteers before the run. My natural bee-attracting abilities will keep me from needing to waste any on myself. -Steve (who's not really sure how he got caught up in all this "bee" stuff, but does remember performing the "Bumble Bee Skit" as a counselor at summer camp in his teens)

Well, since I brought it up, it got me to thinkin' and that leads to googlin'. So, here it is in all its inanity, the basic outline of the "Bumblebee Skit" to be performed at campfire by teenage counselors for a mob of summer camp kids.
========
Bumblebee, Bumblebee...
Counselor1 is on stage with a glass of water. He is acting really strange and far off, pretty out of it and moving slowly, grabbing at objects in midair that aren´t there. Stupid goofy look on his face. Counselor2 walks on stage...
Counselor2: Hey, do you want to play a game?
Counselor2 proceeds to teach Counselor1 to be a "flower" that goes "up in the morning" and "down in the evening". Counselor1 stands up tall with arms raised and hands like petals as he says "up in the morning". He bends over like a wilted flower as he says "down in the "evening". Counselor2 is a bumblebee, he explains to Counselor1. Counselor1 is supposed to got through the cycles of day and night repeatedly. When he comes up in the morning with Counselor2 buzzing around him he is supposed to tell him: "Bumblebee, bumblebee, show me the honey". Counselor2 meanwhile has gone to get a sip of water and is ready to spit on Counselor1 when he says "show me the honey"
Comedy ensues because Counselor1 can never get the part right. He always forgets something, says it wrong (e.g. "Bumblebee, bumblebee, show me the MONEY") or gets distracted. Counselor2 gets frustrated and spits out his water to the side after every time Counselor1 screws up so that he can talk to Counselor1 and correct him.
The last time through Counselor1 has gotten a sip of water while Counselor2 wasn´t looking and when Counselor1 says nothing (bc his mouth is full of water) when he should be saying "show me the honey"...
Counselor2: (Spits, then, FRUSTRATED, shouts) SHOW ME THE HONEY, YOUR LINE IS SHOW ME THE HONEY Counselor1: (Spits on Counselor2 as he says this)
========
Yep, that basically sums up the summer of my 17th year. I worked at Camp Concord in South Lake Tahoe. I usually played the part of the flower. I'm not yet sure what implications this had on my further psychological development. However, physically, it has left me inextricably attractive to bees.
