Hi- I am coming to LA to visit a friend, and wanted to plan my trip around a trail run. I am debating between the Malibu Creek 25k on April 6th, and the Sycamore Canyon 18k on May 18th. Is there a significant difference between the two runs? If so, which would you recommend? Thanks so much for the input!

You can get an idea by looking at Santa Monica 50k. That course (a guess) will e similar to Sycamore Canyon, but easier by 400 feet or so. You can get an idea about what the Malibu Canyon is like by visiting Bull Dog 50K site. All of this is dependent on the final course for both. I would do both. I will do both. Great terrain and great race directors.

Wendell just wheeled the course yesterday and measured the elevation gain (6,000'). The course is very similar to Bulldog 50K and the Xterra 14 mile courses, except the start/finish area will be a little different to get over 49 kilometers and we'll go clockwise. We'll have a topographical map on the Malibu Creek web page soon at: www.pctrailruns.com/Malibu_Creek.htm

Sounds great. I don't remember Bull Dog being two loops. But then I was a lot younger then.

I've run both courses a few times and agree that you should do both if possible. Both offer spectacular ocean views and this time of year will be coated with fresh plant life. They both have challenging climbs, but the Malibu Creek/ Bulldog mountain climb is a longer, slightly steeper climb - clearly my preference, actually my favorite trail in all of Souther California. I have found the trails of the Malibu course more interesting and more challenging than Sycamore. The folks at trailrace.com have a good topo map of the Malibu Creek Trail race. Keep in mind it's counter-clockwise as displayed so you may have to reverse it if we're running clockwise. You're gonna love it!

The Malibu Creek course map and elevation profile are now up on the web page: www.pctrailruns.com/Malibu_Creek.htmI also added a few photos of Malibu Creek, the rusted army vehicles at the MASH site, and the sunset from Mesa Peak Road. Wendell (PCTR)

Not if you want to wear bib# 191.
[Do you mean entry into the race? or the park itself?]

Sorry, typically I call that a parking fee.
Pt. Mugu was $5.00, I assume the same in nearby Sycamore Canyon.
