I haven't done the summer run, but I know the course and I've spent many hours surfing at Lindamar.
One thing that you might not be aware of is that it can be pretty chilly there. The park is close to the coast and if conditions are right the fog will be in and can cover all of the little loop (see map.) That means temperature in the low fifties, water dripping from the trees and general pre-start miserability. As you climb up towards North Peak (big loop) you'll clear the fog. if we've got a heat wave (i.e. offshore flow) then you, being from Hawaii, have nothing to worry about!
The loop up to North Peak has no aids station and a fairly rocky, technical section, so it might take you longer than the map leads to believe. Make sure you take enough water up to the peak!
Last thing I can think of: watch out for the local menace they call Poison Oak!
Happy trails to you!

If you look at the course profile, it looks like rabbit ears! Those two loops up the hill are tough.

I am running the 21k this summer and I want to know what is the deal with passing or being passed on the trails. Can anyone help. When approaching someone from behind on a narrow single track, I simply use "coming left". When passing face to face (there is a section on the Pacifica course, Montara Trail, where this comes into play), just stay to your right. I tend to be pretty vocal, and use "stay right" along with eye contact. I'm in the opinion those climbing at a slower pace should yield a bit to those on the way down. Hope to be there (30K). Will G.

will anybody be running the pacifica 50k this year. i am from hawaii and this will be my first ultra away from my homeland. any advice would be greatly appreciated. Challenging course in a beautiful park...first 9k loop (which you'll do 3X) is single track on soft trails, two series of switchback climbs/descents...the 12K loop (which you'll do 2X) begins on soft trail, but as you progress on the climb the terrain changes to an uneven and very rocky technical single track (Montara Trail), then on a hard/sandy fireroad to the summit turnaround. The descent can get pretty squirrely (just ask Wendell of PCTR, or read Scott Dunlap's race report from January linked below), so you'll want to pay attention to your footing. runtrails.blogspot.com/2007/01/pacifica-50k-oceans-cliffs-and-smiles.htmlGood luck. I ran the 12k portion of the 21K yesterday in Pacifica and it was an awesome run. I got to the top in 45 minutes and back down in 30 minutes. Lots of vegetation to plow through but no big deal. When I finished the run I started to have this intense ear ache in my right ear. It was horrible. I thought that because I sweated so much with my IpOd earphones that I gave myself some sort of swimmers ear or I came down so fast the atmospheric pressure was causing havoc with my inner ear. So I got to the car and was freaking out because every time I tried to touch my ear it would hurt worse. I looked in the mirror and I thought I saw something sticking out of my ear. I thought oh my god there's a cricket, fly, tic...something in my ear. So I reached in and pulled and out comes a inch long stem with a pollen flower at the end. Ear ache went away and all well. Maybey I shouldn't have plowed through the vegetation so fast.

So I FINALLY got to reading the review from Scott about Pacifica while on my lunch break at work at like 3am and let me say I am so excited about this run. He gives great reviews and I found myself getting closer to the screen and getting very antsy and excited about it!! Also, I got to meet Michael H. at skyline and when I saw him I thought "that kid has it,hes going to be know" and from reading that I think I was right. I am very impressed

Sarah,
Aany chance of this selling out or will there definitely be race day registration? I'm hoping my flight back from Chicago isn't delayed so I can have a full night's rest.

I should have clarified that and said that we won't sell out - UNLESS people hear that I got two bags of MINI BAGELS for the finish line. I think that could easily convince another hundred or so runners to come to Pacifica, don't you, Norbert? Sarah
