Hi,
I'm racing SC mountains 9/27 and am wondering what to do at the San Lorenzo River crossing. Should I stop and take my socks and shoes off or should I just barrel through? What do most people do?

From the subject (and the popularity of Born to Run) I was expecting a barefoot running question...

I've thought about these, though they would be overkill for one crossing.

I barrel right through, as do most people. I have heard of, but never witnessed, someone stopping to take shoes off.

Hi, I'm racing SC mountains 9/27 and am wondering what to do at the San Lorenzo River crossing. Should I stop and take my socks and shoes off or should I just barrel through? What do most people do? most people keep their shoes on. its faster. furthermore, people i have seen trying to put their shoes back on seem to be frustrated by the amount of muck on their feet which makes it even more time consuming to put your shoes back on

Just don't wear goretex shoes - they are great for really shallow stuff and running in rain but once the water gets in over the top it's not coming out.

My shoes could use a good cleaning anyway. Thanks for the tips. I was wondering about the water crossing.

From expirience, the socks are almost more important than the shoes. Don't wear cotton, they take forever to dry.

I ran this race a couple years ago and took my shoes off on the way out. The previous poster was right; your feet will be covered with wet sand/dirt if you take your shoes off. You'd have to bring a towel, sit down and dry your feet, then put your shoes and socks back on. Entire exercise takes a couple to a few minutes.
On the way back I just ran through. My Salomon GTX shoes (i.e. Goretex) retained a lot of the water so my feet were "squishy wet" for the rest of the run.
I'll probably run through both ways this year, but I'm going to wear a non-waterproof shoe.
Have a great run Marcus

Run right through! It's fun, way faster, and your feet will dry enough to not be a problem in a short amount of time. But do mind the previous advice of wearing socks that are not cotton and shoes that are not gore tex.
The water crossing is one of the best parts of this race.
