I was doing my first 50km race in santa cruz and I saw what I assumed was the first place guy coming in under 4 hours. I also heard that he did in fact accomplish coming under 4 hours and setting a course record. When I looked at the results, the day after, the runner was no where to be found as number 1 and no new course record. Does anyone know if the 1st place guy in fact broke 4hrs and there is a mistake in the results or maybe the guy was running a shorter distance and I am mistaken? Thanks

The 1st finisher incorrectly started the orange loop before the aid station. He tried to fix the mistake when he when out the 2nd time. But he ended up 3 Km short (missed the River Trail section). We're really disappointed. He definitely would have set a new course record.

Well that explains why I never saw him (Dave) until I was finishing the 29k and he was heading back out for the Final 21K - I was about two miles from the finish when he went cruising by in the opposite direction. Did any other race leaders go with him when he mad the wrong turn? Were they also disqualified? Here's what I remember form the vantage point of the 2nd (official) finisher of the 29k :
On the first outbound section, I was right behind three runners who were the first to arrive at the aid station. I kept expecting to see some runners before the turnaround but we hit the aid station without seeing anyone. Weird.
I passed two of the runners ahead of be on the first half of the lollipop loop before mixing in with the 21k runners. Now it got harder to keep track of who was who. I passed on more (runner - the "official" 50 k winner) - on the first climb of the return leg - and no one passed me after the first mile. So, That accounts for the three runners I saw ahead of me, but I guess there could have been some that went off course and then retraced or made up the missed distance?

Brian,
Yes, there were two 29 Km runners who started the orange loop with Dave. One tried to correct the mistake but he too missed the River Trail section (3 Km). The other runner correctly went all the back to the aid station and so he was the official 1st place finisher in the 29 Km.
