Hey folks,
I'm heading out to CA next year and want to run one of your classic's. Last year I did the Headlands Hundred, now I want to bring my 24 year old son to join me for a race.
Any suggestions on one of the best to enter early next year?

The first one in 2010 up there is Pirate's Cove in March, which is also probably my favorite of the 50K courses up there (though they are all close). Note that the Rodeo Beach course is identical other than the name.
Speaking of Headlands, the 2010 schedule shows a "Headlands 50" several weeks before the Headlands Hundred, though the latter still indicates a 50 mile option. I wonder what's up with that...

Given that this is the PCTR message board I feel obligated to limit my picks to their races (not a bad thing at all). Of those I'd say Skyline to Sea is a wonderful choice. Big pluses are it's a net downhill, a point-to-point course, wonderful trails, and a great variety of ecosystems: redwoods, the chalks (alpine forest like), and the coast.

Sarah told me that the 50 and the 100 will use the 2009 course, including the "washing machine loops." The 100 will in fact be only a 100, so there will be no credit for finishing 50. And the timing (3 weeks apart) lets people use the marathon or the 50 as a warm-up for the 100. |
