What do the Woodside veterans recommend: trail shoes or "road" shoes? I'm doing the 35K. Usually I prefer road shoes unless it's a little bumpy or loose on the downhills. Any suggestions/warnings/cautionary tales will be appreciated.

for the 35k, there is really only one major downhill (coming down to the finish) and it's primarily single track with some being brand new blue rock trail. you should be ok in road shoes.

Another vote for road shoes!
I was out there on Sunday. Heads up to all, there's a downed tree on the Skyline trail about 2.5 miles out of the King's Mtn Rd AS (when running towards Bear Gulch). No big deal but it does force an unexpected traverse up the the embankment.

I was just there on thursday evening and ran/hiked the 10k route. My advice is that if you can run in trail shoes... use trail shoes due to the large amount of leaf litter on many of the trails. I have never run with trail shoes before thursday and was very glad i had them on...felt very stable. That said for the 35k it is possible as stated in above posts that the lion share of the run only needs road shoes...(i prefer my road shoes as well)
