Thanks, you guys! So many nice comments - Wendell was really, really pleased to hear that so many of you were reading and writing here.
Wendell actually just called - he's in the last section and, when he started it, he said "See you around midnight." But he just called to say that it'll be closer to 10 pm!!
It was very hot again today, but it helped SO many that he was in the home stretch, I think. Harry and Martina hiked up with cold Sprite and a baggie of ice that I gave them from the Brockway Summit and met him about 3 miles out. He got to Brockway Summit at about 1:40 or so. Ate some hamburger and had a V8, and then rested in the shade where it was way, way cooler. I got his pack ready with Taco Bell steak and crunchy tacos, gummy candy, ginger cookies, goldfish crackers, and pretzels. (That's for you, Miki and Addy.) He was up at 2:30 and ready to go.
So he just called and said that it's starting to cool off and he's moving well, so expects to be done around 10. Yippee!!
What a big accomplishment - I'm so proud of him, especially doing this on little sleep in the days/nights going in and having to cram it in on the long weekend so that we can get Aaron back to school tomorrow morning.
Thanks again, everyone, for your support and kind comments - it really helped Wendell to know that you all were pulling for him out there. And thanks, especially Harry and Martina for all your help (and for letting me shower today).
More tomorrow - after we're home!!
Sarah

Perhaps this could be a PCTR run of the future? As for the food it already is! Norbert

So when does Taco Bell® become a PCTR event sponsor? (I'd pay extra). Well done Wendell. Aaron, you're up next... 10K-A-Day for 10 Days Perhaps next summer. Will G.

Thanks, you guys! Wendell finished at 9:18 p.m. - 65:50:58 after starting, which includes down time, driving to the casino, etc. Aaron and I waited at the trailhead in the car and saw his flashlight as he RAN down the trail and popped out, still running, onto the road, to Aaron's cheers of "Way to go, Dad!" We kept telling him what a great job he'd done and that he was just about "there" as we drove past him, out to the main street, and around to the park entrance on the other side of the final bridge. We hurriedly parked the car, hopped out, and ran to the end of the bridge, where his flashlight was just coming into view. More cheering from both of us, as he ran across the bridge, ran to the posts where he'd started, and stopped. We were both telling him "Great job!", and then I looked at my just-stopped watch - and told him, "Excellent! You broke 66 hours!" which was SO absurd that we both dissolved into laughter.
He took of his dirty clothes and cleaned up with a jug of water, just standing by the car, much to the surprise of two late-night bike riders who came across the bridge and caught him rinsing off in their headlights. The three of us piled in the car and took off.
We're home now - got here about 1 a.m. after a 30 minute sleep-break near Davis.
The trail total mileage is ~165. We've each done it before a MUCH more fun way, over 4 1/3 days, running during the day and eating and sleeping at night. Although we'll probably be back again every year a few times to run up there, Wendell won't do it this way again - he doesn't really enjoy the slow hiking, "just being out there" kind of thing and really DOES enjoy doing it in sections with friends, taking breaks in between.
Thanks again for following his progress and for your nice comments. It was great to share your comments with Wendell as the hours went by - it was really fun to know that you guys were checking here to see how he was doing.

I'm so glad it all worked out according to plan! We almost called again at 10PM but then thought it would be nicer to let the family celebrate by themselves.
(Ultra) Big Congratulations!!!

Thanks, everyone. The TRT is a spectacular trail. Since I've done it before in stages over 4 days, I was very surprised at how difficult, hot, and slow it became. It was very motivating hearing your nice messages along the way and a big part of why I kept going to finish it. Sarah and Aaron were the best crew ever!! I'm putting this one on my "happy to have done it list"...
