There are many sports/runner stores available to you. I like the Treadmill in Carmel.

thanks.yes. i found the treadmill on net. seems like a good store. shall try it out. looks like most of you in sunny california enjoy running as far as possible. im going to run the 8km track at Carmel valley. hope there are running companions in the "short" run as well. reading this message board im starting to get a bit nervous for all the worlds mountain lions, ticks and aggressive yellowbacks...hehe...

Don't worry - there are plenty of people doing the shorter distances at Carmel Valley! Last year, we had almost a hundred finishers in the 8 Km and 17 Km combined, so you won't be alone out there. I think that the people who run the longer distances just post more frequently to this message board.
And, while you will probably see lots of horses and dogs at Garland Ranch, it's pretty unlikely that you'll have to worry about mountain lions, ticks, or yellowjackets there, at least at that time of the year.
See you next month!

I won't be at Carmel Valley so you needn't worry about yellow jackets.

Since 1890, there have been 22 people killed by mountain lions (aka cougars) in the US and Canada. More people have been killed by lightening or dogs. I wouldn't worry about mountain lions. Speaking of the big kitties, I finally saw my first one yesterday. I was running up near Black Mountain (but not in Rancho San Antonio -- long story of bushwhacking!), looked over, and there it was. I just kinda raised my arms and roared as best I could, and it sauntered off. No big deal, but I did pick up a big rock after that. Anyway, that was my first sighting in 30+ years of California hiking, running, backpacking, etc. They're really rare. I wouldn't worry about yellowjackets either, with Steve not there. ;D - Fred

There is a Fleet Feet running store in Aptos, about a 30-40 minute drive north of Monterey on Hwy. 1. Their website doesn't have any product info, but you could call or email them to see if they have the product you are looking for. Try www.fleetfeetaptos.com. And have a great time while here, this is a wonderful area to run!

while im at it: do any of you know a sports/runners store they can recommend either in carmel/monterey or further south (salinas/santabarbara/LA)?: i am looking for a pulsewatch by Polar (or Garmin)..... Running Warehouse is in San Luis Obispo... 735 Buckley Road, San Luis Obispo, CA, 93401 www.runningwarehouse.com/I went there on my way down to the PCTR Santa Monica event back in April, as I had forgot my handheld. Great store, just off of 101. As for a (cheap) place to stay for Carmel Valley, I have made online reservation for the South Salinas Motel 6 ($50), about 20 minutes away. Will G.

super! lots of good tips. shall try out both runningwarehouse and treadmill. really looking forward to running in california (which will be exotic to me - usually running in norway).. Less than two weeks away. i have really no worries with natures pestiments after all the comforting thoughts, only worry now is finding the way on track (but i guess there is good markings all along?). shall try to hang on to those runners planning to run the CVrun 8k faster than 50min (even though it seems that theres alot of climbing up to 1000meters heights)...hmmm...
