I had in my calendar that the Carmel Valley Trail Run was on 10/14. I noticed today the date is listed as 10/7, did the date change, or did I just misread the date when I put it in my calendar?

Nope, we had to reschedule. Our friends, Carl and Ann, put their Firetrails 50 and Golden Hills Marathon on a different date this year, and we don't want to conflict so we moved Carmel Valley.
We'll be at both, actually - putting on Carmel Valley, of course, and both Wendell and I are running the Golden Hills Marathon as prep for Javelina.
Hope you can still make it!

Not sure if I'll make it or not. A friend is coming to town for a trade show on the 15th, so the new date doesn't work for her, but there will always be more races in the future!

hmmm...October 7th? I wonder...just how stupid would it be to try and do this race one week before Firetrails 50, which is two weeks before Javelina?
- Mildly stupid? - Really stupid? - "Are you trying to hurt yourself" stupid? - "Beat's running San Diego one week before Javelina" stupid? - No, not stupid at all...you'll have a great time <Loud Evil Laugh!>

- Mildly stupid? No. - Really stupid? Yes. Unless you run < 50 Km - "Are you trying to hurt yourself" stupid? No. It's not as hard as HH. - "Beat's running San Diego one week before Javelina" stupid? Not nearly as stupid as that! - No, not stupid at all...you'll have a great time <Loud Evil Laugh!> Yes.

Btw, I tried out the Ultimate Direction pack like yours and the horizontal bottle fell out twice going about 7:30 pace downhill. It seemed fine at a slower pace. Do you have problems with the bottle flying out?

Do you have problems with the bottle flying out? I had some trouble on my first run with it. It seems to be more secure if you make sure the loop on the water bottle cap is facing toward your back and that the bottle is pushed far enough into the sleeve. Also, it seems to help if there is a little something in the top zip pocket. In general it does seem a little less secure than it could be. I was actually considering taping my bottle or something to make it a bit tighter fit before Headlands, but I ended up not having a problem at all during the race. Probably because I never approached anything like a 7:30 pace on that one

Hi. Im planning to join the carmel valley run oct 7. im really on vacation with my family...coming all the way from norway. i run a good deal trail runs in norway, and it seems carmel valley run is a nice run, social and informal. Im thinking of running the 8km track (the times from 38min to 43min looks hard to reach...). Iam really astonished however of the prices for accomodation in the area....and with starting at early morning its probably best to stay in the nearbys?? any of you got some advises for a norwegian novice??

When I first looked at the Hotels/Motels link on the Carmel Valley page, too, I saw only high-priced places to stay. But when I changed the dates to the October dates of the event, it brought up several places in the $100-$150 a night range - is that still more than you'd like to pay?
People may have specific recommendations but, in general, you could get to Garland Ranch from Seaside, Monterey, Carmel, Pacific Grove, or even Salinas.
I would take another look at that link when you have time and try searching for October dates - the August rates are much higher than the October ones. If you're still unable to find anything, just write back here and we'll see what we can do.

Also, I've changed the 'Subject' to include 'Places to Stay' in the hopes that you may get some other responses.

Thanks for your reply. and yes; i also changed the dates and found cheaper accomodation: but i would really prefer to stay as close to the valley as possible. only place i found was country garden inn which seems very nice....but no vacancies! is there other places like this in the nearbys (and i mean in the valley)? perhaps bed&breakfasts or something a bit more comfy than overprized and pretencious places like the bernardus and quail lodge and the likes...? i guess the option is a good hotel in monterey or carmel (we shall off course also visit the aquarium)...tonight we shall begin planning the trip to what seems a fantastic state drinking a bottle of wine called Clos LaChance from Monterey county. Looking forward to participate in the run (8km). hoping for times around 44-45 minutes. have runned 11 of the 16 last days to recover from lazy summermonths....

Going to Monterey, you will find cheaper places, and the drives are always beautiful. Even nice cheaper places in Pacific Grove. You are going to one of the loveliest spots on earth- enjoy- and enjly your first PCTR race!

There are many options in Monterey, Pacific Grove, and Carmel that are only a short drive from the run location and are nicer places to stay as a tourist. In fact, budget-minded folks should know there is even a first-rate hostel in Monterey near the aquarium which you can learn about at montereyhostel.com.
