I'm trying to decide between the December 15th Muir Beach 50k and the December 22nd Rodeo Beach 50k. This will be my first 50k.
From the map and the numbers, Muir looks more difficult, but I'm only basing that on the extra elevation gain and slightly more confusing course instructions.
I ran the Pirate's Cove 30k earlier this year, so I have some knowledge of the trails, but any insight into these other two runs would be great.
Thanks!
Josh

I don't think that you'd find the Muir Beach course to be confusing - it's really just two loops, just like Rodeo Beach. So the main difference is the elevation gain - both are challenging courses with lots of up and down, but people have finished their first ultras on each course each year, too.
I'm sure that you'll hear back from others, too.

PS The Pirates Cove 30 km that you ran is the same as the Rodeo Beach 30 Km loop.

Great, thanks Sarah. I think I'm leaning towards Muir so I can run with a friend who will also being doing his first 50k.

So we decided to put off the 50k until next year, neither one of us feel quite ready. Going for the 33k instead, and I know it'll be a blast.

We're pretty sure that Muir Beach will sell out - it has for the last couple of years due to limited parking. Rodeo Beach, however, shouldn't - the cap there is so high that we probably won't reach it in December.
