Wow, a 1 mile/min pace is pretty incredible (some might even say record-breaking), whether starting out, or at 18 miles. I think you are sandbagging, Steve, when you say you are a "mid-packer"! ;D Errr....scratch that....I meant 1 mile per HOUR! The 1 mpm might be possible going down that hill however ;D

For you, it would! In fact, I think that was your pace at the end of HH last year, and that hill's not nearly as steep! Sarah

The problem is that I would be rolling somersaults rather than running. I actually tried running down it on Sunday by zig-zagging back and forth. It took one near slip to let me know what a stupid idea that was!

Yeah, if you look at the course records for the Diablo Marathon, they're approximately equal to those same people's typical 50 Km times... I stupidly signed up anyway because it's the only event you have in April that I can make it to. I'm fine with walking the whole thing, which is good since I probably will be. Luckily since you'll have people doing 50 miles I won't be the last person on the course...

For those of you wanting to do the Diablo race and are interested in comparing the difficulty to other races, here’s a suggestion. This works for any other PCTR event ‘round here. Go to the results page, and find a runner who has finished in a time you’d like. Then look up that same person on www.zinsli.com it’s a site that aggregates results from many races. It may be that your index runner hasn’t done enough races; if so, pick someone else and try again. Lots of folks who do the longer races do lots of ‘em, so you may strike paydirt pretty quickly. And I’ve found many of the older folks in particular have very consistent times. So this can give you a comparison of difficulty between courses. I found the Diablo fun run (er, Marathon) to be at least as hard as any Wendell & Sarah 50k, and I run Diablo all the time. The downhill beats the crap outta me; I even had to walk the downhills.
