Hey there fellow runners I'm thinking of doing my first 50k this Summer, specifically at the Angel Island "race". Does anyone have any feedback for my newbie self? And besides the obvious nutrition practice/training I need to do, I would love any course specific things I should be aware of. of course of there is a reason I shouldn't use this course as my first 50k that advice is welcomed as well. My distance running background includes 3 marathons, including Boston in 2007. Thanks so much! c

Good choice -- my first ultra was the Angel Island 50k. ;D
It can be cold and foggy there in the morning, usually giving way to bright beautiful sunshine later in the day. It's really awesome cruising around in the morning's pea soup fog, hearing the various foghorns to give you some idea of where you are 'round the island (the GG Bridge horn is the big kahuna!), only to gain some gorgeous views later.
It's a simple event, with just one aid station (start/finish) that you keep coming back to as you loop around the island in various ways. With the dramatic weather variations through the day, it continues to feel all-new all day long.
That last cruise down to the finish is a *blast*!!!
Have a great time, and watch for deer,
- Fred

Yep, what Fred said. Angel Island is probably a good choice for your first 50 Km because of your road marathoning background, too - it has mellower elevation gain than almost all our other 50 Kms, and is about 1/3 pavement, 1/3 fireroad, and 1/3 singletrack trail, so it won't all be an adjustment for you. In addition to the aid station that you pass through after each loop, you may leave a drop bag in that area, too, if there are specific items that you'd like access to (drink mix, additional clothes, etc.) throughout the day. I hope that you decide to give ultras a shot - it would be great to hand you your 'First Ultramarathon' coaster out on Angel Island after your finish! Sarah

Excellent course! Ditto what Fred said. The last stretch before the aid station is a blast!
