We received this e-mail requesting advice: "We're hoping to do the 50 miler in August. We would like to know if there is anyone who could help us figure out how to eat more when we are out there as it seems the further we go the less we want to eat. We both have seriously sensitive stomachs - Cliff blocs are generally the only thing mine will tolerate. Any thoughts/directions? We would really appreciate any feedback - thank you."

Wendall: I have found that if you practice eating on runs it truly helps. Start on small runs (10 miles) and experiment with gels, drinks (Boost, Ensure), fruit, quarters of sandwiches, poptarts, chips, etc. I found that at each aid station I would try a new food but also stick with what works for me. Some people cannot tolerate solid food and rely only on drinks like Boost or Ensure. I haven't tried those types of drinks but many of my fellow runners use them. I think you just need to experiement and get your stomach used to running and eating, That is my $.02. Leslie

That is exactly what I did. Trained with different foods that way come race day I knew what my stomach could and could not handle. I love paydays, cliff bars, gels& blocks, poptarts,m&ms,salty peanuts and bananas.I tend to go for sweeter things,my blood sugar drops or can drop fast so the sugar helps me.My hubby swears by salty stuff....
Its all trial and error. I have learned that I cannot have energy drinks the day of runs & no powerbars .....they sit like stones in my stomach.

I switch back and forth between salty and sweet. I can usally tolerate the sweet stuff more than salty, so I try to concentrate on salty while I still have an appetite. When absolutely nothing looks edible, I go for liquid calories. I haven't tried Ensure yet, but I have a feeling that will be perfect. Again, everyone is different, so experimentation is the best way to go.

Everyone is different and there's usually a wide variety of food to choose from. I personally like potatoes dipped in salt and brownies. Even when nothing seems to taste good, potatoes seem to be bland enough not to give me any problems.
