I have just registered for the Santa Cruz Mtns 21K. I have participated in several half-marathons, marathons, and triathlons, but this is my very first trail run. Any preparation advice for a first timer? I am traveling from North Carolina, so any special items I need to pack? I notice there is a river crossing - does everyone remove their socks and shoes for this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm sure that you'll get lots of helpful advice here, and you may want to check out the other Santa Cruz thread (Subject: Santa Cruz 50 K). It started out talking about places to stay in that area, but moved on to discuss the river crossing and sandy sections of the course, too.
If you're doing the 21 Km, though, the sandy sections are a moot point - only the 29 Km and 50 Km runners have to cover those areas.

I read through the other Santa Cruz thread and the link to the Cool Runnings thread, so I think I'm covered on the water crossing - sounds like the overwhelming consensus is to "roll through it". Any other first time trail run advice is welcome. Thanks!

From another 'first timer' thread:
Ditch the watch, hike the hills, and get lost in the beauty. In all seriousness, you should not have any difficulty transitioning to trails. However, I would not recommend approaching a trail run the same way as a road race. Don't be afraid to power hike the hills, especially early when it seems everyone else wants to run them. I find the energy saved by hiking comes in pretty handy when doing the hill a 2nd or 3rd time. Also, don't be concerned about your time at all. While these races are timed you'll probably find a much more relaxed crowd than at the start of a road race. I think a lot of people are there for the experience and to say they finished.

I look at it this way: At a road race, the emphasis is on RUNNING a good time. At a trail race, the emphasis is on HAVING a good time.
And I don't see how it's possible not to have a good time while running in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
