Are the trails for Santa Cruz 50K rocky or mostly smooth, especially the downhills? Wondering if people are leaning towards heavy trail shoes or lighter road shoes. I'm wondering if I can get away with using Vibram FiveFingers. Uphill on rocks is usually fine. But downhill on rocks 1/2 to 1" in diameter is slow going or painful. Any info appreciated.

I'd like someone else to chime in, as I've never done the course.
But I believe it's mostly soft-ish trails. I'm wearing my Asics, which are lighter and closer to road than trail shoes. (Plus, I'll be wearing them through the water crossing.)
Enjoy!

Some of the trails are quite rocky/gravelly, so I would not recommend VFF's. You could absolutely get away with lighter road shoes if that is your preference, though. Keep in mind there is a river crossing (one of the best things about this particular race). Most folks just run right through, as your shoes should dry enough fairly quickly.
Have a great run! :-)

People really just run right through with their shoes on? I would think your shoes would dry fast, but certainly not the socks. Have any of you done this in the past?
