Which is harder, Headlands 50 miler or Diablo 50 miler? I've done Headlands 50 and 100, too, but never seen Diablo's course. Thank you for any input. -dan

While I haven't run Diablo since it never seems to fit my schedule, I am pretty familiar with the course. I think that pretty much everyone agrees that Diablo is a significantly harder event. In fact, it is considered one of the hardest 50-milers around which is why you will note finisher times roughly similar to, or even slower than, Miwok 100K for the same runner.

I agree with Steve. Diablo is MUCH harder. My time for Diablo was 14:50. For Headlands 50, 11:16. And I was in better shape for Diablo (I did Diablo the same year as Headlands 100). Diablo is much more technical, has longer uphills and downhills (whereas Headlands is more rolling), and often seems to be very hot.
Also, it partly depends on how fast you are. If you are slow like me, you will be finishing Diablo in the dark. Coming down the mountain is very technical, and in the dark (even with a light) that final descent was rather scary. If you are fast enough to finish Diablo in the daylight, it would be less of an issue.
Diablo can be very hot. Headlands generally is not quite as hot.

I have to agree, Diablo is WAY harder.... I did a recap on Trail Run Times and my podcast Running Stupid that may (or may not!) help... www.trailruntimes.com/?p=250runningstupid.net/The sad news is the race appears to have been canceled this year... Darn budget cuts! Argh, I wanted a rematch! The good part is that will give you 14 more months to train!!!!! ;D All Day! ~Ken

I've done Headlands twice, though the second time was the first half of the Hundred. It's hard but my finishing was never really in doubt.
Diablo 50 I tried once, last year, and badly missed the cutoff at 37 miles. I'm both sad and relieved that I won't get a chance to avenge that DNF this year.
