I've run the 50K three times and the 30K once. I've worn trail shoes, but I would think it would be relatively doable in road shoes. The hills aren't too bad except for the title climb on the orange loop, which you only have to do once.

I have heard about those roots at Rocky Racoon. My friend fell like five times in the first 40 miles. No problem with roots here. You will be fine with road shoes. I have run this course in road shoes before. There are only a couple steeper down hills, but mostly the down hills are pretty gradual. The rockiest part is mostly going up hill, so that should not be a problem.

I agree, the course isn't very technical and certainly runnable in road shoes.
The hills are a bit different out here (I'm assuming you are coming from Texas. As my name suggests, I used to live/run in Atlanta). The climbs are much taller and extended out here. 3, 4 miles at a time, which is quite different than what you have on the East Coast/South. This can be quite a shock to the system for many East Coasters.
That being said, this is a very scenic course (ocean views, Bay views, Golden Gate Bridge, etc.) and, if need be, you can always drop at 30k.
Have fun!

PCT said on their "Q&A" that they would post to the message board if it were close to selling. Unfortunately that no longer seems to be true. Pretty much if any distance sells out, it's time to make a decision. I also see (from looking at the list of entrants) that the official limits for each distance don't seem to be followed. They overshot on some distances and didn't reach the limit on others. My guess is that the overall total is what matters most for their permits.
