I am doing my first 50K later in the summer, and the Salt Point 50K looks like a blast. I don't live in California so I'll be flying out for the race. Hotels in/near Jenner are 1. a bit pricey 2. many don't have availability during the race weekend. Does anyone have any recommendations on hotels in the area? I think San Fran would be too long of a drive the morning of the race, but what about the Santa Rosa area? Is that reasonable distance to drive from for the race?
Any hotel and/or race advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Very little housing in the area. Mostly camping. Very small motels and B&B's which will be expensive. PCTR website will clue you in on housing then google for a chamber of commerce to see if you can find more. There won't be much and it will cost $$$. This small race added to normal summer traffic will fill it all up. Roads are very slow (two lane, windy) normally and if there is road work... Be sure and leave extra time to drive from your motel. Err on the side of anal retentiveness. You don't want to be stressing before a race because you suddenly realize the couple of inches on the map take 3 times as long to drive as the freeway at home. Guerneville is the closest town of any size and it's not a metropolis by any means. It's a small town. Fort Ross and Gualala are much smaller. Jenner? HA HA HA. ;D However, Salt Point and the Sonoma Coast are very beautiful. You'll really love the run if you plan ahead, reserve early and allow time to drive casually. If you're lucky and book now, maybe you can get a room for one night and book somewhere else (S.F.?, Mendocino?) on your trip itinerary for before and after. That way, the $$ bites not as bad.

Get ready for sticker shock 2Rocky. With reservation fees, you're looking at about $40/night for the privilege of sleeping on the ground. If this keeps up, I'll be doing my camping in a B&B to save money for race fees. Either that, or I'll have to take up barefoot running. Maybe, bareass running to save $ on the shorts. P.S. Is that a picture of you? Gadzooks, you look like a rampaging NFL defensive end. Don't want to get in your way on the trails.

Yep GP That Is I. All 220 pounds of me. In fact THAT picture is from last year's Salt Point TR. Funny you should mention the Football reference...I "spiked" my water bottle at the finish! About 15 of us camped in a group spot so the $$ was minimized per head. But you might check some of the overpasses...The local residents would probably settle for a bottle of Mad Dog or something... Salt point is a great place to run and the distance from population centers keeps the crowds away. The private campground down the road might be cheaper? www.oceancove.org/occamp.html

2rocky (you must be named after the trail I ran on last week. ) The private campground is listed much cheaper and from pictures and the description it sounds better (I've only stayed at SP, which is nice enough). But, when the OC folks see the new State Park rates, they'll probably jack there's too. Plus, it's first come first served, so you take a chance on being locked out and there are no Walmart parking lots around to save you . I'll probably just reserve Saturday night at Salt Point this year and then wing it. I hate encouraging the State. They mismanage our finances, then try to compensate with huge tax, or fee hikes. Maybe this year, you can do your own rendition of the Iggy Shuffle at the finish line. I'm considering moonwalking backwards. Is that too retro?
