How can I get a sweet-lookin' foot like that?! Two basic ways...you could die standing up and not be discovered for approx two days (both feet), OR...you can run full out for the first 8.5K of a 25K, then decide to take your eyes of the trail while carrying on a conversation with a lightning fast Colombian about futbol/soccer (one foot). Yeesh. If you try running this week like you were, are you going to wear the brace? It still looks bad Will. I missed you at Firetrails this past weekend. I was near Fern Dell in Redwoods. I was wearing my brace and tried "trotting" a few steps to test my ankle. It was a no-go. And mine is over 4 weeks old and it's much prettier (??) than yours. My toes were bruised too, but only half way up. Yours go all the way to the nail. You win!!!

Yeah Sarah it's not one of my loftiest accomplishments. And Miki, your legs will always be prettier than mine regardless. [Planning treadmill by 10/22, w/elastic sleeve, no brace] Will G.

As you have all been waiting for an update with bated breath... Above is a side-by-side of Day 9 (left) and today (Day 18), all things considered I'm doing pretty well with recovery/rehab. To recap: compression, ice bag (every hr), elevation, ROM exercises, crutches first two days...crutches replaced by gel/air brace days three & four, begin 4m walks (normal, no limp)...contrast (hot/cold) dips (5X per day), walks without brace, 1hr (~25m) stationary bike days five through twelve, continue ROM with resistance...days thirteen to present continue daily walks (6m), stationary bike (high cadence), ROM on balance pad (weight bearing) along with resistance exercises, 3X daily massage (self) of joint area to break down potential scar tissue, wearing light elastic sleeve/support during all activity. Still have some bruising (now greenish/yellow/black) on back of lower leg, below calf...a little sore there. Will be attempting first run today (1hr treadmill, elevated to 8ยบ, mild 6.0+mph). Will re-evaluate 11/24 Quad Dipsea (and perhaps 11/10 Stinson 30K) readiness later this week. Will G. [5:00pm update: Treadmill run exceeded expectations, felt fine (no hitch), especially after ~5 minutes in. Ran the grade for the full hour (6+m), back home with an ice bag/elevated. That'll pretty much be the routine each day for the next week, then go from there, hopefully trails by late next week].

Will,
Glad to read that it's healing up and the treadmill run went well today. If you decide to run Stinson 30 K, the Heather Cut-off and Matt Davis switchbacks will put you on the edge. You'll need to focus. No talking to other runners!!
Miki, hope you're ankle is healing too. I neglected to ask you how it was at SF One Day.

I hear ya Wendell, have learned my lesson. I actually got to run that section along with Brian Wyatt after sweeping the Dipsea section of HH...awesome. [Miki- see update in previous post above] Thanks, Will G.

Who was, at the time, actually dealing with another unfortunate result of loss of focus... Here's how that went down... Me: "Uh...hey Brian, I'm afraid you're going the wrong way" Brian: "What do you mean?!?! There's a f**king pink ribbon right there!!!" Me: "Yeah I'm about to put that one in my sack"

Nice to hear your run went well Will. That is very very very good to hear! Wendell: My foot is not doing as well as Will it seems. I tried trotting around a little at thingy Collins and found it to be still very painful. On top of that I am dealing with degenerative disc issues now so I might be volunteering for a while. I am able to bike though, so I at least have a way to work off all those aid station Cheetos. ~Miki

Thanks Miki...
Did you ever get an x-ray?
In 1999 I rolled my (left) ankle while playing soccer, similar to the visual condition of this latest Grade II sprain, however weight bearing pain/limp remained at six weeks...turned out I had a small vertical fracture of the tibia.
