Grade II Sprain...occurred ~8k into Carmel Valley 25k on probably the tamest stretch of trail on the course leading into the aid station. Was up front with eventual 25k winner, carrying on a short conversation and NOT paying attention to the terrain. Rolled it on a slight right hand turn, assuming on a rock of some sort. Loud snap/pop, we both stopped, I suggested he continue on, and I made it into the aid station on my own just as swelling began. Driven back to start (thanks again to volunteer). So...aggressive rehab program started immediately upon return home Sunday, as of today (Tuesday, day of photos) I am walking decent (slow, no limp) with air/gel cast and along with contrast therarpy (hot/cold), I am pushing ROM limits. No specific pain, just general tightness from swelling (toes to high shin). Will be on stationary bike (50M) by this evening to begin/maintain alternate fitness. Ambitious maybe, but I plan to run 11/24 Quad Dipsea. Will G.

ijeff, I did the same thing! I thought it was about the nails and though, well they don't look that bad, then I realized the point of the post Good luck with the rehab! As long as your smart about it, it should be okay for Dipsea (in my entirely unprofessional opinion )

Yeah I had pristine toenails until I started pushing the trail mileage over the past couple years...I've lost the second nail on right foot six times (it's missing in the picture), and my right big toe went black but lived, you can see the bottom half has grown back nice and pink(ish). Will G.

Thanks Katemojo, appreciate it. Day 5 (Thursday) photos... Bleeding from partial torn ligaments has settled, swelling/pressure has eased somewhat, continue frequent contrast (hot/cold) dips and icing, along with ROM exercises. Walking normal (with gel brace), including up/down steps, spent past two days on stationary bike for 1hr+ at high cadence/med resistance. No specific pain, just dull pressure from toes to high shin. Plan treadmill jog/run within two weeks. Will G.

Will,
I was just going to comment that if I had your "mad photoshop skillz" I could probably do something really creative with your foot pictures. However, after seeing those last ones, I think it would probably be redundant.

I don't understand the toe discoloration - what causes that? Did you sprain your toes, too?!?
Hope you heal quickly and get back to runnin.

Andy-
Good question...in a Grade II sprain there is some ligament tearing, thus some internal bleeding. In time the blood, with the help of gravity, settles in the toes and heel (bruising).
A minor Grade I sprain, in which you simply over-stretch the ligaments will usually be free of any discoloration, and of course less swelling/pain/etc.

You're already cycling and plan on doing the treadmill? Don't overdo it Will. I did on my last sprain and it took over 5 months for the pain to go away and the tightness took 3 more months after that. I'm taking it super slow this time and it wasn't even as bad as my last one which looked similar to your current fugliness. Good luck with your healing. I'm pulling for you to do the Quad D. ~Miki

You're already cycling and plan on doing the treadmill? Don't overdo it Will. I hear ya Miki...although there was an obvious ligament tear, it appears it's just not too severe, so I guess I just got lucky. I rode the stationary bike this evening (hard) for 25m (1hr) with no air cast/brace, which allowed normal flexion/extension of the joint throughout the pedal stroke(s). No pain at all, and again, I'm walking completely normal (4m today around local lake, no brace). I'm confident I'll be doing a sustained treadmill climb (on toes, balls of feet) by next week. A heel strike (flat or downhill) however, will be an issue until the swelling has subsided. More pics come Monday (I know you all can't wait). Will G.

Will, thanks for the explanation. I figured it was something along those lines. Sounds like the recovery is coming along nicely - that is great and I hope it continues. :-) I'm pulling for you to be ready for the Quad Dipsea as well. Go Will!

Will, dude, that's *cool*!!! How can I get a sweet-lookin' foot like that?!
Oh yeah, there's a muddy Firetrails 50 tomorrow morning. :-)
Heal up well; I'm looking forward to seeing you at the Quad Dipsea,
- Fred
