S & W, will you be organizing a trail maintenance event again this year, and if so, which weekend? I'm guessing it could be the weekend of 3/29 - 3/30.
I'm sitting here staring at the AC100 application...

I would be in, too. Staring at my TRT100 application...

I am running AC, too, so we probably schedule a day on either Mt. Diablo or in the Headlands sometime this spring or summer. AC and Wasatch - the other hundred that requires trail work - aren't until September, so there's no rush. I can tell you that it definitely won't be the last weekend in March, though. All other hundreds (like TRT, Norbert) simply require 'service', which can be helping at an aid station, etc. If you'd like to help at an event, just send us an e-mail or fill out the 'Helper Form': www.pctrailruns.com/Helper_Form.htmSarah

Yes, I can do either trail work, aid station or work at any 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization.

Yeah, I know - I don't really understand the last part, but I know that's how they structure it.
It's just much easier to schedule other types of help than it is trail maintenance, so most people don't do the actual trail maintenance unless they're running AC or Wasatch.

Me too - I looked it up: There are a bunch of organizations in the community where you can perform service (328 found for my zip code!). The closest fitting for me: Go to a school for students of low income families and teach. I'm a physicist, so I can do some experiments (e.g. simulate Galileo's measurements of falling balls from the leaning tower of Pisa). My accent would add a special note. I let you know! Norbert

That sounds neat, Norbert - I'm sure that the kids would love it.
Yeah, I know what a 501 (c) (3) non-profit is. What I meant by that was that I don't understand how general volunteering relates to ultrarunning. Typically, a 'service requirement' is incorporated by an event as a way of ensuring that all participants 'give back' to the trails, the sport, etc.

You are right - but I like the fact that in case you can't make it for trail work, etc.. you have more freedom in scheduling something close to your home. This makes it easier und you still give back to the community (even though not to the running community necessarily).

cool!
I might check if Rancho San Antonio needs volunteers. Since that's where I mostly run at the moment that'd be only fair. You could join me, Norbert and explain that Galileo thingy to me!

Per the AC site:
"The Annual Angeles Crest 100 Mile Endurance Run will require eight hours of Trail Maintenance Work that supports an Endurance Running Event in the same calendar year of the race.
Only Trail Maintenance Work that supports an Endurance Event will be accepted.
General volunteer work at an ultramarathon will not be accepted."
You can't work at Rancho San Antonio unless they hold an ultra on the trails on which you'll be doing maintenance.

How about an event at Rancho, Sarah? ;D Harry, I would be in for work at Rancho (is my training ground as well), however, it doesn't feel like there is lots of work needed - it's so nicely groomed! Norbert

d**n fine print!
You're right, Norbert. It's actually way too nicely groomed for my taste... Hidden Villa is about the only somewhat technical trail.

Harry, Norbert, and PCTR, count me in for trail work requirements I need two for AC and Wasatch each. The last weekend in March is not possible because it's the Barkley weekend - Go Wendell However, I'd like to get my trail work done by the time when my race season starts in April and I'll have no time to do trail work. Perhaps we can meet ourselves and do the trail work at Mt. Diablo on the return course for the Diablo 50M two weeks later. My trail work experience in Mt. Diablo last year was mostly to cut back the overgrown esp. the vicious poison oak. See if S&W will agree with this idea. Chihping

I'm in for trail work. I just realized Vermont added the requirement for 2008.

We are planning a trail maintenance day on Mt. Diablo on Sunday, March 23rd. You may work the whole day or for just a few hours, if you prefer.
More details on when and where on the mountain to meet coming soon.
