Will try to make it, Sarah- thanks. My husband rides his bike up Mt. Diablo every day on his lunch break (he is riding in the RAAM, beginning June 12th) and he wants me to see how awesome Mt. Diablo is

Sarah, thanks for your opinion. Lucky you that you and Wendell got to run this today. I was lucky too: I sneaked out of work for a long "lunch break" and ran 7 quick miles on Stevens Creek Trail. And whom did I meet there? Chihping! He seems to be everywhere at the same time! I'm off topic again.. Regards, Norbert

This will be very interesting for me as I've always just run the fireroad in training. However, I am one of the people that would probably prefer to come down the singletrack as I technical downhill and running on the flats. Yep, both loops of the 50 Km go up the singletrack Back Creek Trail and come down the fireroad. Wendell and I actually prefer the opposite direction - coming down Back Creek is one of our favorites - but it's much looser and more technical, so the bulk of the runners have told us over the years that they prefer to come down the fireroad...so we gave in. It's definitely an easier descent this way - you can kind of relax and recover, especially the last few miles, which are darn near flat. Sarah

Ah, a man after my own heart! Wendell and I feel EXACTLY the same - if you have to be on a (stupid) fireroad, you might as well be going up and save the technical singletrack for the flight down!! ;D Sorry, Steve - majority ruled. Sarah

Sarah, having said that, last year when I flew down the fire road (ok, I walked) I saw 50k runners coming against my direction (they obviously made their way up on their 2nd lap). Question: Was that allowed back then (free choice of direction?). Thanks Norbert

Yep, it was allowed last year - but never again. A few people were confused and went both up AND down the fireroad. It's nearly the same distance but, as you can imagine from having traveled both ways, much faster.
So, to keep it simple, everyone will go the same way on both loops from now on.

Tony, I would be confused, too. It will all clear up once you're here. Then it's so simple: You see this high and steep wall in front of you and you just run, it uhm, walk it, no wait: climb it up. Addition to your pack list: Bring crampons and oxygen mask. See you there, Norbert

Um, Norbert - we're going to have you fire you from the PCTR marketing department, at least for the Diablo events! Sarah

hahaha.... On another note.Today is day 4 that I have not ran.My knee is giving me issues SO I am taking a few days off to rest it up.It was quite painful the other day.Perfect timing..2 weeks before the run.......I didnt get my last 20 mile run in which was suppose to be last weekend but due to some unexpected things we had to postpone it to today, well my knee issues put that on hold.......I am not worried about the distance, but I always feel better if I can get that last 20 miler in before my 31......d**n!! Aww, well Id rather go in injury free then not i suppose.........of course it would be 2 weeks before isnt that how it always is ? I guess I am supposed to be tapering anyways right...hahaha

Nowadays, I just run longer events slower as training runs.

For those who've never been to Mt Diablo - here's a 3D image of the (approximate) course. Elevation exaggeration is 1.75 so it's not quite as steep as it looks on the images - it'll feel that way though! Hope this is of some use to somebody.
